blitzen trapper working hard for the money
When I found out that Dan was asked to review Blitzen Trapper for The House List, I begged him to let me tag along to shoot it. We’ve both loved the band (and especially their song “Furr”) since they first got together, and it had always been a dream to see them in person. Their act alone topped out at close to two hours and covered every song I was hoping to hear, so I can officially cross Blitzen Trapper off my bucket list. the afghan whigs deliver
After a 13 year break, the Afghan Whigs are back! Dan jumped at the chance to finally see one of his favorite bands perform live and brought me along to shoot it for Bowery Presents. The entire show was back lit, which made my job pretty tough, but it was great to finally see these legends perform live. See some additional photos below that didn’t make it onto The House List:
wild flag, because it’s fun
Have you seen Portlandia? Then you probably already know Carrie Brownstein, the lead singer of Wild Flag. Yes, she is in a band, and yes, she is totally legit. Dan was tapped to review Wild Flag at The Bowery Ballroom and asked me to come along to document the show. The show was super high-energy and Carrie shredded on the guitar. Sadly, there were no birds in site.
santigold triumphantly returns
The summer I was 18 I moved to Union Square. I was interning in the photo department of the Condé Nast magazine Cookie and was living in NYU Housing with three boys. Tha Carter III dropped, so naturally they forced me to listen to it and I became obsessed with Lil’ Wayne, and Santogold, previously a producer, released her first album. I became totally enamored, ate up all of her mixes with Diplo, and instantly knew I’d be a fan for life. Fast forward five years and here I am in Brooklyn, still working at Condé Nast, and still loving Santigold (she had to drop the first O and switch in an I per a legal dispute). During those five years Santi went back to producing and said she wouldn’t release a new album, and my heart broke knowing I would probably never get to see one of my top three favorite artists ever perform live.
Then, Santi came to Brooklyn. And she performed at the music Hall of Williamsburg to a sold-out crowd, and I was tapped to shoot the entire show for The Bowery Presents. It was a wild show filled with props, three costume changes and the audience dancing on stage; Santi and her two backup dancers just ooze coolness. She recently announced she will in fact be dropping a second album and is going on tour to be the opener for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sometimes in life, you just have to wait for those moments to all come together. Fortunately, it is finally happening.

baths’ time on friday night
Since I left my position at Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure, I have started freelancing more. One of the projects I’ve picked up is photographing concerts for The Bowery Presents’ House List, which provides reviews and imagery from all of Bowery’s music venues across New York City. These include Webster Hall, Brooklyn Bowl, Mercury Lounge, The Bowery Ballroom, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Terminal 5, The Wellmont Theatre and the IZOD Center in New Jersey.
On Dec. 2, Baths played at The Bowery Ballroom in the Bowery. My boyfriend wrote the review for the electronic pop band led by Will Wiesenfeld as I snapped away to capture the show. It was an intimate setting, and with just one person providing all of the music from their laptop and few instruments, it was a bit of a challenge to make aesthetically appealing through the lens. The light was interesting, though not ideal, and there were dozens of small candles placed around the entire stage that provided a lot of depth to the setting. Baths was great, the crowd was relaxed and everyone was grooving along as if this was their last chance to dance. See some additional shots below:
world’s most-visited tourist attractions
One of my friends at Travel + Leisure, Lyndsey Matthews, had the task of researching and crunching tons of numbers to compile T+L’s list on the World’s Most-Visited Tourist Attractions. While she was completely inundated with trying to sort out various figures, dates and math (!), I started rounding up images of the venues on my end. Since her research was continuously in progress, that meant that the photographs we needed to accompany the text were always in limbo. Finally all 50 top attractions were nailed down, with No. 1 coming in for Times Square, New York, New York. Times Square is conveniently located one block away from our office, so I popped down there to take some shots of the tourist trap (and probably looked like a tourist while shooting myself), and landed on the front page of Travel + Leisure. The story was also picked up by The BBC, Yahoo! and quite a few personal blogs.
fifty best bars in america
Visiting a bar while it is closed — and during the day — is strange. The interiors are quiet and tidy, and bathed in sunlight, which is not how I am familiar with being greeted by any New York City bar. At both venues I met with the head bartender who accommodated every request, especially Leo from Eleven Madison Park who ensured I personally tasted his whiskey concoction at our 10 a.m. shoot.
